HMWPE / PE500

Overview

HMWPE (High Molecular Weight Polyethylene), also referred to as PE500, is an engineering-grade polyethylene offering improved impact resistance over PE300. With better wear and abrasion performance, it is particularly suitable for high-impact, dynamic applications such as conveying and marine systems. It maintains its mechanical properties in damp and wet environments and provides excellent chemical resistance, making it versatile for industrial and food-related applications. Its low moisture absorption and smooth surface also support hygienic use and ease of cleaning.

Key Features

  • Higher impact resistance than PE300
  • Tough and flexible under load
  • Excellent chemical and corrosion resistance
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Good wear and sliding properties
  • Easy to machine and fabricate
  • FDA and EEC food contact compliant (natural)
  • Lightweight with good energy absorption

Applications

  • Conveyor components and guide rails
  • Liners for chutes, hoppers and bins
  • Marine fenders and dock bumpers
  • Cutting surfaces and protective pads
  • Food processing and packaging equipment
  • Transport trays and work surfaces
  • Wear blocks and mechanical shims

Weaknesses

  • Lower abrasion resistance than PE1000 (UHMWPE)
  • Low stiffness compared to filled engineering plastics
  • Difficult to bond or glue (requires welding or mechanical fastening)
